Lithium-ion-polymer ( LiPo ) packs are the successors to the well-known lithium-ion ( LiIon ) packs. The main advantage of LiPo batteries is undoubtedly the capacity to size ratio. They are very small in size while maintaining a very high current capacity, which allows you to select the appropriate pack for virtually any AEG replica. They do not have a memory effect. They can be charged very often, without prior discharge. Frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.
Remember not to discharge the LiPo pack below 3V per cell and not to overcharge above 4.2V per cell. Another advantage of LiPo packs is low percentage self-discharge. When not used, the pack loses about 3-5% of energy per month. Keep an eye on the pack, because during a very long storage may come to a discharge below the allowable minimum value (3V per cell) and irreversible chemical reactions that can cause deterioration of the pack properties including its permanent damage, in extreme cases – ignition. When not in use LiPo pack should be charged an average of about 70%.
When properly operated LiPo packs life is on average 500-700 cycles. An important aspect is the temperature at which LiPo packs can operate. Unlike other rechargeable batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures. However, they should be charged at room temperature. In order to keep LiPo batteries in good condition, they should be balanced during charging using a service plug, which most LiPo packs have (a good LiPo charger has a built-in balancer).
